Truth Summary
The article claims that school choice creates a two-tiered education system, and promotes inequality among families. In
actuality, SGOs encourage affluent Hoosiers to fund the education of low- and
middle-income students. And vouchers have opened the doors of private
schools to many more students of limited means, including students of color. If
the Journal Gazette had its way, the advantageous education provided by private
schools would only be available to the rich.
The Journal Gazette has
it exactly backward. School Choice doesn’t create a two-tiered education
system. Failing to provide opportunities to low- and middle-income students it
what truly segregates families by wealth and worsens income inequality.
Lost entirely is the
notion that our state’s policy focus should be on educating students.
The JG's editorial page editor is so focused on funding her favored kind of
school that she fails to consider what best serves students. This editorial
views students merely as little bags of money — funds to which public schools
are solely entitled.
